The 2019 season came to an end for Leyton Fourie, when the RKT driver competed in the Northern Regions Rok Cup held at VKC on Saturday 9 November.
2019 has been an exciting year for Leyton, who showed tremendous pace in the both the National and Regional series. As far the Regional OKJ Championship was concerned, Leyton walked away with the title a few months ago, but can now officially say that he is the 2019 Northern Regions OKJ Champion.
Leyton had a good start to the weekend, taking pole position. He drove three good races, finishing 2nd in race one and 4th in race two. Leyton took the win in the final heat of the day, which was a fitting end to a great season.
“We had a good day and I was in the fortunate position that I didn’t need to get involved in the frenetic ‘make or break’ desperate driving that went on for the lower championship positions. It was clear from the very 1st lap that one particular driver and team was prepared to win at all costs. I simply was not going to put my body on the line given my position in the championship. This allowed me to take second overall for the day, but more importantly made my championship win official,” commented Leyton.
Whilst Leyton’s results speak for themselves, the points don’t show the major shift that he has gone through as a driver. It has to be said that 2019 will be remembered as the year that Leyton truly became a racer. His level of driving maturity and strategy was very impressive for a driver of his young age.
“I had a really incredible kart this year and felt really good behind the wheel. I think if not for a few unfortunate incidents at the nationals, the points may have been a completely different story, but that is the nature of the sport. Thank you to my team at RKT, to my sponsors and to my family and friends for their incredible support, concluded Leyton.
