Leyton Fourie ended the 2020 Oettinger Polo Cup Championship on a high note, claiming a race win and securing the 2020 Rookie Championship title in Port Elizabeth this past weekend (31 October).
There were no “tricks”, just treats on Saturday morning as Leyton put in a fantastic qualifying performance, earning himself a spot in the Superpole Shootout. Whilst this in itself was a great achievement, Leyton went a step further, by setting the fastest lap time and putting his Signature Motorsport VW Polo on pole position. This, in his very first outing at the coastal track.
Although he found himself under intense pressure from teammate, Matt Shorter, Leyton put in a very strategic race one performance, saving his push to pass for the end of the race. This gave him the boost he needed to get some clear air between himself and Shorter at a crucial time. Together with some precision driving, Leyton romped across the finish line to claim his first Polo Cup victory of his career. An outstanding achievement in just his first main circuit season and in his debut race at Aldo Scribante.
Heat two, which served as the final race of the season, was a 40-minute endurance race. The first race of its kind for Polo Cup. Leyton put in an impressive performance, taking the chequered flag in third place.
“Words cannot describe the feelings I am experiencing after a fantastic weekend. I am so happy with the results and would like to give a massive thank you to the entire Signature Motorsport team as well as DRiV Incorporated. I am blessed to have the most incredible support from my sponsors, family and friends and I dedicate this win to them,” enthused Leyton.
Leyton’s 2020 performance has launched his main circuit career in emphatic style and bodes well for what will undeniably be a very bright future in motorsport.
