Leyton Fourie put in an impressive performance at the second round of the 2020 Oettinger Polo Cup Championship, which took place at Red Star Raceway this past weekend (26 September 2020).
Leyton was exceptionally quick, in his first ever appearance at Red Star Raceway, topping the time sheets in more than one of Friday’s practice sessions. He set the third fastest qualifying lap on Saturday morning and was fortunate enough to gain a position during the Superpole draw. This allowed Leyton to start race one from the front row of the grid.
Leyton lost a few positions during the frenzy to get through turn one. He put in a strong drive to regain some of his lost positions and kept those watching the live stream on the edge of their seats. He finished the race in fourth place.
After starting from fifth on the grid for race two, Leyton was involved in an on-track incident, in which he was bumped from behind. This compromised his race, dropping him down to seventh.
Leyton started the final heat of the day from pole position. He had a fantastic start holding onto his lead. The young Signature Motorsport driver led the very experienced pack for seven of the eight laps before he was forced wide and dropped down to third. Leyton held this position to the finish line, but demonstrated, in only his second outing, that he is capable of taking wins in what is arguably one of the most competitive motorsport categories in South Africa.
“It felt good to be back on track and my car was, as always, perfectly prepared by Signature Motorsport. I felt confident in both the car and myself all weekend. Although I am disappointed that the race win was taken away from me in such a manner, I am happy that I was able to run at the front in just my second outing in the category,” commented Leyton.
“A massive thank you to my family, team and sponsors!”
